I believe in working hard all year, and then making it up to my family with several big vacations, where we can just enjoy each other, have new adventures, and live life with no “to do” list. Our major time together is six weeks during summer, when we travel and have a blast. It’s funny that my daily summer postings have become the most popular part of the blog…it is all personal stuff, shot with my little point & shoot camera, and mostly for my kids. At the end of summer, we make a huge book of 700+ images in the style above, as our keepsake. I actually make a book for each trip, but the summer one is the super size one! Last year, we enjoyed Nantucket…but this year, our favorite place in the world, San Francisco calls us back. We will be staying in the city all of June and then going to Alaska in August. I am beyond excited to be out west again~

The studio will be closed for six weeks beginning July 1, 2009. We have a few spots left for June sessions, but not many, so if you need portraits, please call asap and we will try to fit you in. We are now scheduling for fall….I know, it’s crazy, but it is our busiest time.

I hope you will come along with us on the blog this summer!

Tracie says: Yay BAY!!! Where are you staying? Renting a place?? You gonna have the yummiest food and wine...but don't forget to pack SWEATERS if you are truly in the city!! We miss it soooo much. xo, Tracie
Lena says: Yes, we have a flat in the Castro/Eureka Valley. I have made sure the heat works well~ and I have about 50 of my favorite restaurants on my radar. We miss it all the time too...lived in the city 11 years.
carolyn bowles says: I love how you can set aside that time for family. So inspiring! And I love how you create these awesome albums. I am always trying to do the same, but find myself drowning in family photos. Do you mind sharing your secret on finding the time to work on family photos, or how to do it quickly? I'd love to hear a trick or two!
Lena says: Yes, I have an assistant 40/hrs a week and that really helps, lol!
Debbi says: What model point and shoot do you use...I know it is a lumix.....
Sarah @ BecomingSarah.com says: I love that your family builds a super-sized photo book at the end of a trip. What a perfect way to remember a vacation. I might have to give that a go!
kelli Taylor says: I'm so jealous!! Have a great vaca!
Aran says: Lena, I always love, love, love your summer vacation photos. We live vicariously through you. I can't wait to see SF and Alaska. So cool!

I am back after a wonderful vacation with my family…to Tortola, St. John, and the Dominican Republic. I think it is so important to take time to relax and continually connect with our families, without the day-to-day distractions that modern life gives us. If you were at Learnfest last week, you will remember that is what I teach and what I live. Learnfest came at the end of my travels and was the perfect ending to an inspiring vacation from the studio. Here are some images of my peeps from my trusty Lumix point and shoot camera!

Tortola beach, paradise

snorkeling in St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands

Dominican Republic caves and petroglyphs

Veronica says: Enough already! I´m in Chicago and it´s cold, I have a cold along with my son, daughter and husband. We´re all on vacation stuck at home with a family cold. Bah humbug! Although, i am enjoying living vicariously through your photos. Thanks so much :)
Jessi Weithman says: I sooo need to get out of Ohio! Look at all these blue skies, I´m envious. Your p&s is capturing beautiful images! I need to use mine more for casual family images, I´d probably capture more of my family doing fun things if I did. ;-)
jodi says: too bad the white stuff in my backyard is snow! great shots-loving how you´re working that p&s! happy new year!!
Ursula says: Oh wow it looks like you were vacationing in my area. :) Yes I would agree you should have a get together I´d sign up for that one! :) The only downside is Alys beach lost many of it´s huge sand dunes, so you have to drive down the road a little to get to them.
buy viagra says: you have a great site!
fahrrad says: Dies ist ein großer Ort. Ich möchte hier noch einmal.
paradise found 30.12.2008

I think I found my own personal heaven on earth today…it is called Alys Beach (pronounced “Alice”). Besides having the most stunning baby powder white sand beach, the artchitecture here is the most inspiring and intelligent I have ever seen in a new development. We are hoping to buy a vacation home here. To see some beautiful photography, visit alysbeach.com.

*love that you can plug your ipod into the pool for underwater music

here and there 29.12.2008

I love the scenery here…a little bit of everything and nothing like where we live! I spent the day with a photographer friend here (Marla Carter) and this lake is right behind her gorgeous studio.

Later we headed back to Seaside for some snacks, chopping, and playing on the big lawn. This airstream is actually a juice bar!

And, here are 3/4 of our crew…chilling out after a long day of play.

mandy johnson says: Hello miss lena, i have the same point and shoot and its sooo wonderful!!!!!!!!!! Glad you loved Rosemary, its sooo peaceful.

We are here in Seaside…right in the Florida panhandle, only about 9 hours from home~

The beaches here are STUNNING, white talcum powder sand and quiet blue water. We have a house share with friends in a neighborhood of the cutest homes you have ever seen, right by the beach. Here’s a photo of the crew…all vacation pics will be with the new point & shoot.

Jennifer says: Can´t wait to see more of your New Orleans experience.
Sally St. Pierre Gerstner says: Lena, Yesterday you photographed my kids for the workshop and I just wanted to tell you that they LOVED it. We talked about it all day long and then again this morning. The day made a huge impression on both Ian and Alexandra. Thanks for making them feel so at ease and I cannot wait to see the pictures you took of them. :)
Naomi says: Hi Lena! I was in your class on Monday, and WOW. . . to say you were inspiring is an understatement. Jesh too. What an incredible person he is, and what a wonderful workshop it was. Thank you. I been feeling refreshed and glowing since meeting you both. . . Naomi

Wow, what a fantastic week it has been on Bald Head Island, NC with my fellow Learnfest (thelearnfest.com) instructors and our wonderful, enthuastic, and inspiring workshop attendees! I don’t think I have ever worked with such a connected group of liked-minded and motivated photographers…my mind and heart floweth over.

Days were spent sharing and learning in the most open way imaginable. Meals were enjoyed on breezy porches with old and new friends. Nights were spent talking and rocking in rocking chairs on the porches of dream homes overlooking pristine beaches. And, everyone slept to the sound of ocean and wind while a flurry of ideas swirrled in their dreams.

A storm held off almost until we were done, but not quite…so yesterday, *just* as we were all sharing our last dinner together, word of a possible tropical storm broke. We made the call to adjust the schedule and stay together late for our panel Q&A and big prize giveaway in order to get everyone off the island first thing this morning, just to be safe. The day was long and wonderful and prizes flowed for an hour and a half. A huge thank you to all of our sponsors!

This morning all but the heartiest of folks left the island to return to all parts of the US and Canada. I hope to post more photos to this thread….since I was too busy teaching to grab more than a couple of point & shoot images. If you have any learnfest photos, please send them to me!
