on top of the world

It will be really hard to top this day…like for the rest of my life. Seriously.

We took a helicopter from Juneau to the top of a glacier, flying over expanses of snow covered peaks and stunning fjords. I sat in the front seat with the pilot and Ethan, while Ted and Cal sat in back. Like the small planes, we all had headsets to communicate and yell out to eachother whenever we saw anything exciting, like mountain goats.

As we approached the glacier, we saw a tiny rectangle of dots…can you see them there in the first snowy shot? Getting closer, we could make out a dog sled camp of 300 professional sledding dogs and their trainers. Each dog had a house, but since it was summer, they were warmer than usual and preferred to be outside. Even the four week old pups slept together outside, while their dog house house just one lone little guy.

We had a fantastic guide Matthew (who actually turned out to be a recent photo school grad) and we learned quite a bit about these amazing dogs, who really race during winter but stay at this camp in summer. All four of us were able to mush (race) our two teams of dogs, who go FAST but are extremely smart and follow a series of verbal commands. Can you imagine how much this group of Floridians loved this sport? I don’t think our smiles left our faces all day long.

I have so many images, I will need to share them in two batches because my internet connection here is painfully slow.

Lena, one of the greatest trips I have ever taken ( and I have traveled alot!) was to Ely Minnesota in the middle of January about four years ago to a dogsledding slash photography workshop escapade! A wonderful photographer, Layne Kennedy, who is now a dear friend of mine, has a passion for dogsledding, and so each year he combines his love for photography and dogsledding into this amazing week. Your boys would LOVE it…and it would be a phenomenal experience for you and your hubby as well!

I had a friend who used to live in Alaska and worked for the National Park Service there. She would tell me all about the sport and how much love she had for her team of dogs…it was another world for this Alabama girl. It’s so cool seeing you experience this with your family!

By the way, that photo of your two boys on the dog sled should definitely be enlarged too — or at least make the cover of your travel book. It couldn’t get any more perfect!
