Today was our last full day on the island and we went sailing with all our friends. Here’s our two captains, Jackson and Cal, manning the boat…what a great day!

My beautiful friend (and successful art dealer), Nicole is having an art show here on Nantucket this week. She has a room full of paintings from the old masters of the Boston School but the work *I* adore is what I am showing here…the mixed media contemporary works of Nina Surel. Nicole sold two three of these works asap, so if you are in the neighborhood, run don’t walk to 4 Chestnut Street tonight for the opening party!

We rented a couple of kayaks this morning and my husband explored the harbor while the litttle boys and I checked out the warf and bough an assortment or random souveniers including a shark’s tooth necklace and a knot tying guide. The warf area here has interesting shops and art galleries…if I lived here, this is definitely where I would love to have a studio!

I’m interrupting my summer blog for some actual work…a session with one of my favorite familes. These three have given me their best challenges for the past three years, but THIS year, they were awesome…I got the stair images before we even started and was thrilled!

I just realized all my favorite shots are vertical, which seems the trend for me…hmmmm.
I wanted to give my clients/friends a real memory of their Nantucket summers. The image with the flag on the brick sidewalk gives me that feeling, and the one next to it, with the kids enjoying post-session smoothies from thr Main Street drugstore/soda fountain. The others are in their adorable backyard at at the Nantucket librar, which is a fantastic place.
We had a fun shoot…and best of all, we *just* finished before the rain came down.

Busy day. The morning began with a performance at children’s beach… slightly worn, irreverent puppets were entertaining a huge crowd and I can not tell you what the play was actually about, but it kept the kids focused for a good 15-20 minutes!
I think our new favorite activity, besides eating, would be sprinkler play. We spent some quality time watching all five kids doing a variety of things with water, umbrellas, sporting equipment, and lots of imagination. It is insanely hot here, so this is a great way to cool off and wear out the kids with relatively little fuss.
Because my husband must see all historic sites wherever we go, we are checking off his list over the two weeks we have here on Nantucket. Although I have a degree in Art History, he is much more enthusiastic in visiting American landmarks than I, and it seems the boys are inheriting that gene. So, today we saw the old mill (the oldest working one in the US…see the cornerstone date above) which they actually got working today. We also saw the old jail which is pictured below and was a bit creepy, but still exciting for the boys.
(still with the point & shoot)

I *had* to have a work day (alone) today…there was so much I wanted to do and I needed a “break” from vacation! The boys went crabbing with some friends and came back with this one poor guy, who later became their dinner. They were filthy, stinky boys and I made them wash off outside by running in the sprinklers…it’s a bit shocking to feel how cold water comes out of the tap here because in Florida, it comes out warm! Wally, our terrier neighbor was happy to supervise for me.
Oh, and for my photographer friends…here what I was working on today! Design Aglow has launched new holiday cards and stunning portfolio boxes. Issue 5: The Success Issue also *just* launched and we will be rolling out much more in the next month, so stay tuned to www.designaglow.com!

I was so happy to learn that my clients-turned-friends, Erin and Chad and their three kids were going to be on Nantucket exactly when we were coming to the island…and today we had a play date at their house. Jackson and Cal are great friends and his twin sisters just turned three and are so much fun! (I have been photographing them since they were newborns and have loved to watch them grow up.) The boys (and dads) built little toy boats, then the kids pretended to be sailors, and climbed all over an old boat at an outdoor restaurant where we had giant sandwiches on homemade bread under a big shady tree.
We had our first family nap after all that playing and eating. Fresh air + non-stop playing + big lunch = good napping!

Saw this sign at the beach…I am still laughing about it and the collection box below. Nantucket is expensive… I mean, they get you coming and going!

We were out for a beautiful sunset tonight with a bright giant full moon following. The kids found lots of creatures and shells in the water here…my feet are still cold! You can totally tell the Florida people on the beach…we are in sweaters.
This is super grainy, but I was too scared to flash the P&S at the town library today. We had reading time and participated in a music class….then all the kids climbed the tree in the library garden. Good times!

Finally, one for the grandmas. My boys are proud to be the only ones on the island sporting black tee shirts (rather than pastels). Rock on!!
What are all these people doing on the pier here…can you guess?

Fishing for snapping turtles, of course!

Now, here’s the drill…
1. tie a piece of string to a huge turkey leg
2. dip turkey leg in the water
3. hold on tight…turtle will take a snack while you lift him out of the water and everyone will “ohhhhh” and “ahhhhh” like it’s the forth of July and give the turtles names based on their size and abilities. Turtles drop back in but come back for more immediately.
Gotta appreciate some simple fun. I think my boys loved this more than Disney…

We also went to the beach and followed a farmer to a beautiful fresh market. (We are eating well tonight!)
